Orthodontics – removable devices
Its use is mainly in the childhood. Wearing it at night is advised at any rate, but it can be inserted even in quiet periods of the day. The more the child wears it, the more efficient.
By their use the teeth of one single jaw can be regulated and what’s more, the jaw itself can also be broadened (if that is not big enough for the reception of the teeth), we can change the relation of the upper and lower jaw (these are the so called bimaxillar devices). The various devices can also be combined applicating one after the other, since not all of them are suitable for the remedy of all possible problems. When an abnormality has been solved, there may be need for another device for the correction of another abnormality.
After the treatment with a removable device it is often necessary to use a fixed device, too, because the removable one is not suitable for making fine tooth movements. However it is indispensable to reach a perfect result.
Removable devices have innumerable advantages. It is easy to remove, so both the teeth and the device are easy to clean. It’s not disturbing from aesthetical aspects and children also tolerate it easier. Its activation and control requires little time. It provides chance to influence the development of jaws. Its disadvantage is that its efficiency mostly depends on the cooperation of the patient, i.e. on the time of application. Not all the deviations can be treated with the device, it means that it can’t be applicated beyond certain age. Another argument against the device may be the relative long treatment period.
